Wessex Networks are looking to recruit an enthusiastic web designer / developer. You will be involved in web projects from the proposal to planning right through to implementation, refinement and future updates in both graphical and technical contexts.

Wessex Networks is an expanding company based in Crawley, West Sussex. We provide a wide range of IT services to SMEs in and around Sussex, and a wide range of web / internet services with an open source inclination.

You will have relevant graphic design experience for web and the accompanying XHTML / CSS coding skills and ideally a sound knowledge of PHP, database and development in an open source environment to assist with and take charge of complete web-based projects. This role has many facets and we are looking for a well rounded individual with a wide range of skills. Experience isn’t everything, but definitely beneficial and above all else, you must be a fast learner.

There will be an element of dealing with and meeting customers throughout the development lifecycle. You must have a reasonable telephone manner, be presentable and confident enough to represent the company well in meetings. The candidate must understand this is a small business and you will be expected to pitch in with all aspects of the business when necessary – even on the IT services side. We offer a wide range of services, and a willingness to learn new topics / technologies and is essential. We are looking for a “can do” attitude, and a candidate with aptitude for learning through experience.

Main Responsibilities

• Formulation of specifications and/or quotes for web projects. Good written skills essential.
• Graphic design and development of web projects
• Client liaison and presentation

Technical Skills

• Experience with PHP including knowledge of best practices and object-oriented concepts as well as working with database driven web applications.
• Quality design skills. We will need to see a portfolio of previous work.
• Ability to hand-code (X)HTML and CSS to create attractive web pages.
• Familiarity with ethical SEO techniques and experience with online promotion
• Linux system administration experience advantageous (Mostly Apache, Database and Mail)

Advantageous Skills

• Knowledge of Microsoft Desktop and Server products, and the installation and maintenance of said products.
• Knowledge of TCP/IP networking in LAN, WAN and WLAN networks and familiarity with current networking, firewall and router hardware and configuration.
