Not at Wessex Networks! The team have been full throttle and have completed some of our largest projects to date. Three new server installations including a complete new network for a global clothing brand plus a whole host of other projects and keeping up service levels on the helpdesk meant that it was all hands on deck. Partners Andrew and Richard even got their hands dirty to help get everything done on time! Help Desk Manager Dave Hearn was only too pleased to have a few extra (and well deserved!) days off before the Christmas holidays to get his house in order!

December started as one would expect very early on the 1st however this year was different as Wessex Networks hosted one of the prestigious "CADIA":http://www.cadia.org.uk pastry mornings. Not being satisfied with a standard meeting "CADIA's":http://www.cadia.org.uk head Jeremy Taylor and Wessex Networks partner Andrew Sewell launched the first "CADIA":http://www.cadia.org.uk Donut meeting! Yes – Donuts – lots of them! The morning was a great success and fun was had by all. Following a few exhibitions that we attended in preceding months we also took this opportunity to announce our competition winners:

*+Second Prize+*
*1 Years’ Email Security*

That synching feeling…

!>/uploads/cloud_sync.jpg(Synchronisation Illustration)! *Sitting at your desk you've probably got the world at your fingertips. All your files, contacts, emails and appointments right there in front of you - in short, you are in control.*

And then you leave the office for a vital meeting.

For many business professionals this is the equivalent of unplugging yourself from your company. Yes you can make calls, get contact information and view emails but is it in real time? Is it fiddly? Is it expensive?

Imagine missing an email on the way to an appointment that gives you a deal-clinching advantage, or the frustration of not having the latest details of a contact to call. Modern business is blisteringly fast so any time lost in getting information could be the difference
between winning the business or missing out.

Here at Wessex Networks we turn that sinking feeling into a synching feeling by keeping you connected to your office even when you're out of it.

It's called Cloud computing. Simply put it's a service that pushes real time information to any connected device be it a computer, laptop, tablet or phone, keeping everything perfectly up to date. In real terms this means never missing an email, being late for a
meeting or struggling to find a contact again.

For details of how you can get "the synching feeling" "call us":contact - we make IT easy-peasy!

Wessex Networks Acquires Fishfood Hosting

!>/uploads/fishfood_whmcs.jpg(Fishfood Hosting Logo)!*Crawley, West Sussex, UK; 27th June 2011:* Managed services provider Wessex Networks announces the acquisition of Fishfood Hosting.

Fishfood Hosting is known for providing big solutions for small businesses, offering great value for money, jargon-free help and advice, and unbeatable personal service.

When Chris Jelley, Fishfood Hosting’s captain, decided to move on to other shore-based projects, he didn’t want to hand over the good ship Fishfood to just anybody. He looked long and hard to find a worthy successor – a successor that continues and values the Fishfood tradition of outstanding customer satisfaction.

h2. What does this mean for Fishfood customers?

For the moment, nothing really changes. We’re not big on change for change’s sake, so we’re keeping Fishfood Hosting just like it is. You’ll notice that we have new billing details, but that’s about it.
You’ll get the same great service, personal approach and value-for-money packages that you know and love.

The great news is that Wessex Networks has a bigger crew on board. So as your business grows, your hosting can too, with the option of upgrading to a virtual or dedicated server. We do lots of other stuff as well.

In the meantime, if you have any questions or need more information, "contact us":contact and we'd be delighted to talk to you.

IT Support for the cost of a coffee?

!>/uploads/coffee_cup.jpg! If youʼre anything like us the thought of a day without that first injection of caffeine is simply unthinkable.

But what happens if after booting yourself up with a skinny latte your IT network decides to go on an extended coffee break itself? With our increasing reliance on IT to support our business and the continuing challenges in ensuring it all runs smoothly, "professional network support":support-agreements has never been more important and yet in tough economic times running a "service contract":support-agreements may be seen as an expensive option.

Many of our competitors employ a "one size fits all" policy to pricing their support. We think this is unfair - why buy stuff you don't need? After all businesses are as diverse in their set up as our team is in its choice of coffee.

Here at Wessex Networks we believe "professional IT support":support-agreements should be within reach of every business and have created an online support calculator to give you a firm idea of how little you could be spending to secure ultimate IT peace of mind.

Simply have a go with our support calculator (see right-hand side of page) and price your own support in a flash! Our support starts from as little as the price a coffee a day so there really is no excuse for getting stung with pricey "ad hoc support":ad-hoc-and-emergencies.

If you need further help why not "give us a quick call":contact? Our friendly, jargon-free team of IT experts are on hand to sort out issues quicker than you can say expresso doppio!

So for the smooth blend of "IT support":support-services without the grind call Wessex Networks, we make IT easy-peasy!

BlackBerry’s: BIS vs. BES vs. Neither?

!</uploads/bes-express.jpg(Blackberry Enterprise Server Express software packaging)! Last week we had a request from two of our lovely clients: “Can you setup our new BlackBerrys for us? “Fine, no problem” I said “let us know who the users are and we’ll add them to your BlackBerry Enterprise Server Express (BES Express) installation. From there it’s just a case of putting their email address and activation password into the Enterprise Activation screen and job’s a good’un”. That’s where all the fun started.

Email on BlackBerrys works in two very different ways. One is called BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS) and one is called BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES). The city folk you see on the daily commute hammering away on their BlackBerrys all have BES. Their IT team (like us) know it’s a good thing. It does proper two-way synchronisation of contacts, calendars, tasks, notes and email and the IT team can even wipe the device if it gets lost or stolen. It’s a cinch to setup for both us as the administrators and the user of the phone. It’s great!

Then there’s BES’ ugly cousin: BIS. It’s configured through a website where users have to put all the settings in themselves. BIS doesn’t do contacts, calendars notes or task synchronisation and the synchronisation it does do isn’t even push! BIS is rubbish! Unfortunately BIS is what you get with most BlackBerry tariffs in the UK and if you want to upgrade to BES you’re now expected to pay an eye-watering £28 + vat per month for each device (confirmed with Vodafone and Orange)! For the vast majority of our clients this leaves them stranded in a gaping void between the “business- focused, great for email” brand BlackBerry markets itself as and what clients end up with.

And it gets worse still for BlackBerry - the real problem for BlackBerry is that the functionality we’re talking about here (which is really the only functionality clients care about) is available on iPhones, Android phones, Nokias and a whole host of other devices already out of the box – for nothing!

The way I see it Blackberry has a consumer email solution (BIS) which is vastly inferior to other solutions we have for SMEs and it has its corporate BES solution which it continues to milk its large corporate customers for. As for our SME clients they fall into the big crack down the middle. You want my advice? Don’t buy BlackBerrys.

Choosing Broadband for Business

!uploads/broadband.jpg!

Selecting broadband or connectivity for a business isn’t as straightforward as you might think. In our experience there are many factors that govern which products you should choose. These include: number of users, downtime tolerance, whether servers / remote access is used and most importantly - what’s available!

The first thing you need to think about is downtime:

h2. Can’t Tolerate Downtime

If you’re in this camp where uninterrupted service is absolutely critical to your business then you need a Leased Line without question with some sort of DSL-based backup. In this context we define absolutely critical to mean that your business would suffer extreme consequences if you were to experience an outage lasting more than a few hours.

h2. Can Tolerate Downtime

This is likely to be a very small or home office where the business is not severely affected by Internet outages and the business can afford to wait for the next available broadband engineer could take a week!

h2. Can Tolerate Some Downtime

For this type of client Internet access is still very important to their businesses. This client should have a secondary connection or as a bare minimum choose a broadband product where Enhanced Care is available (bringing BT line fix times down from 8 days to 24 hours).

Once you know which of the “downtime groups” you fit into you need to think about usage:

h2. Remote Access or Large Uploads

This is the case with most of our clients. Where you have any sort of server access or remote access (such as email, dial-in VPN, remote applications etc.) or you do a lot of uploading the key is to get as much upload speed as you can to ensure users aren’t plagued with slow response times. You should select products in the following order based on what’s available and to some extent accept the cost:

* FTTC with 10Mb upload
* LLU ADSL2+ Annex M (2.5Mb upload)
* ADSL2+ (1.3Mb upload)
* LLU ADSL2+ (1Mb upload)
* ADSL Max Premium (0.8Mb upload)

If you’re in the “can tolerate some downtime” group you should be selecting another connection too:

* If you’re happy with the speed of your primary connection you need just a cheap and cheerful ADSL/ADSL2+ connection for failover / backup / redundancy.
* If your remote access speeds are slow then you should bond two or more identical connections (ADSL only).
* If you need more speed and you’re on a budget or bonding isn’t an option then you should load balance two identical connections.

h2. No Remote Access, Small Uploads

In this case you have the greatest freedom. In terms of performance only you should select products in the following order:

* FTTC
* ADSL2+ Standard
* ADSL Max Standard

If any product is too expensive, you should work your way down the list until you find something suitable.

Furthermore, there are a few special cases:

h2. Poor Product Availability

With any luck poor product availability will be your only problem and the products that are available will provide you with sufficient performance for your business. If you are unlucky enough to have bad / long lines as well then we feel for you (see below)!

Here our “ADSL Max” products will likely be your only option. They offer up to 8Mb download speeds and 0.8Mb upload speeds. If the speed of your first connection is not sufficient then you should ask us about bonding another one to it. If the speed is satisfactory and you just need fail- over (based on being a “can tolerate some downtime” customer) then a one of our cheap and cheerful ADSL Max products with a 2GB usage cap will be the perfect companion.

h2. Bad/Long Lines

In central Sussex we see this all the time where a client is either a long way from the telephone exchange and has a really terrible-quality BT line installed in the dark ages. In these cases if you’re not happy with the speed you have to bond or load-balance two or more connections.

h2. Lots of Users

If you have lots of users and things are slowing down at peak times talk to us about bonding or load balancing.
