Transferring Domains

If you wish to transfer your domains to us the process can sound complex with all sorts of jargon to contend with but it really isn't too bad.

Nominet

Our tag is WESSEX

This process applies if your domain ends with in any of the following: .co.uk, .ltd.uk, .me.uk, .net.uk, .org.uk, .plc.uk, .sch.uk. There is no charge for transferring these domains, and we do not require that the registration be extended.

Nominet domain names are "pushed" between registrar's which means you need to make this request to your existing registrar first - either by logging into their website, or phoning them. If you'd rather we did this for you, or you get stuck, please email us your existing provider's login details and we'll do the transfer for you, or point you in the right direction.

Where your existing registrar does not respond, does not comply with your request, charges more than £10 + vat for a transfer or if they have gone out of business you can also transfer your domain directly by logging in to the Nominet Online Service. There is a £10 + vat fee (payable directly to Nominet) for this service so always start with your existing registrar first as it's normally free.

gTLD (Generic Top-Level Domains)

This process applies if your domain ends with in any of the following: .asia, .biz, .com, .info, .mobi, .name, .net, .org, .pro, .tel, .xxx. There is no transfer charge for these domains but we do require that the registration be extended by at least one year (see Domain Names for prices).

gTLD domains are pulled by us from your old registrar. Before we can initiate the transfer request to "pull" the domain over a few things are required:

  1. The domain must not have been registered or recently transferred within the last 60 days
  2. The domain must be unlocked.
  3. The Administrative Contact email address should be set to something you have access to or hostmaster@wessexnetworks.com.
  4. The Authorisation Code must be obtained.

Points 2, 3 and 4 are usually achieved by either logging in to your previous registrar's website, or by calling them. If you need help, or you'd rather we do this for you then please email us your existing registrar/provider's details.

Once you checked point 1 and sorted points 2 and 3 then please email your Authorisation Code to support@wessexnetworks.com along with the domain name you would like to transfer. We will then start the transfer for you and let you know.

Once the transfer has started our systems will send an automated email to the Administrative Contact email address (as set above in point 2) asking to approve the transfer. If you have chosen to set this to hostmaster@wessexnetworks.com then we will approve this transfer for you otherwise please follow the instructions.

Once the transfer has been approved, you may receive another email from the outgoing provider to the same address. If there are instructions in this email that allow you to approve the transfer once again then please follow them and the transfer will usually complete within a few hours. If we receive this email we will approve the transfer. If this email is not received then the transfer will automatically take place within 5 days.
